The Architect to Our Artists

As our new Chelsea building at 533 West 19th Street opens to the public in May with an exhibition by Michael Armitage, listen to an episode of the Dialogues podcast with architect Annabelle Selldorf, who was recently named among TIME’s 100 Most Influential People of 2025, and whose firm Selldorf Architects designed the forthcoming new location.

New Chelsea Gallery Opens May 2025

David Zwirner’s new Chelsea building at 533 West 19th Street, designed by Selldorf Architects, opens May 8 with a solo exhibition by Michael Armitage. The new gallery is adjacent to our other two 19th Street spaces in New York; Zwirner has occupied this address since 2002 and construction on the new building, which replaces the existing one, began in 2024. Annabelle Selldorf, who has designed all of David Zwirner’s global locations to date, designed this new building with a focus on expanded exhibition spaces. The ground floor of the building, where Armitage’s exhibition will be on view, features 18-foot-tall ceilings and three gallery spaces (totaling 6,000 square feet), skylights, and concrete floors.

The gallery first moved to Chelsea, from SoHo, in 2002. Here, David Zwirner stands on the roof of 525 West 19th Street holding a scale model of the gallery’s original expansion into 533 West 19th Street, c. 2006.
