Spanning four decades of work, this book offers readers the opportunity to immerse themselves in the personal and creative world of the Japanese artist Yoshitomo Nara, best known for his bold images of children with large heads and wide eyes that challenge viewers with their direct gaze and defiant stance. These captivating yet ominous characters are part of a wider visual vocabulary established by Nara to explore and communicate themes of home, isolation, resilience, belonging, regeneration, hope, and freedom. Organized thematically, the book provides a comprehensive overview of the evolution and breadth of Nara's artistic expression. Yeewan Koon explores how Nara's singular aesthetic is drawn from his formative experiences in Japan, as well as his ongoing environmental and societal concerns, which are deeply rooted in nature and the communities of Japan's northern Tohoku region, where he grew up. Barry Schwabsky's essay, illustrated with details of the artworks, focuses in depth on Nara as a painter. Josh Kun discusses the inspiration Nara takes from popular music—folk songs by American singer-songwriters featuring anti-war messages, melancholic blues and, later, glam rock, punk and new wave. The book also features an in-depth chronology illustrated with childhood photographs and pictures of Nara's studio, offering a deep dive into Nara's life and art. The corresponding exhibition is co-organized by Guggenheim Bilbao, Museum Frieder Burda, Baden-Baden, and the Hayward Gallery.

Michael Armitage (born 1984) makes large-scale oil paintings on 

 (bark cloth) that possess a seductive artistic beauty. With their expressive figures jutting against shallow, undefined backgrounds, they generate an uneasy atmosphere and appear gloomy, sometimes even disturbing. The British Kenyan painter masterfully interweaves stories and themes from his East African homeland with international artistic traditions. The works brought together in this catalog, 

, tell of the fragility of various political, social and psychic conditions. In this oversized paperback folio, Armitage’s paintings and drawings are displayed in a large-scale format, inspired by how the works were presented amid the modernist architecture of Kunsthaus Bregenz. Supplementing the illustrations is an extensive conversation between Armitage and Thomas D. Trummer, in which the artist offers deep personal insight into his creative process.

 is a play written by Bavarian playwright Franz Xaver Kroetz.

It is part of a trilogy of radio plays from 1971 titled Trilogie Münchener Lebens. The play was first broadcast as a radio play in former West Germany on Südwestfunk in 1972. A second version was broadcast in former East Germany on Rundfunk der DDR in 1974. The West and East German broadcasts are the basis for two radio play adaptations by artist Christopher Williams. Both adaptations are recorded in German using the same technology used to produce the original broadcasts of 1972 and 1974.

Looking back at Oscar’s practice for the last 10 years, specifically, the progression of the themes of blackness/void, games and failure, the book is a non-linear journey, finding moments of convergence between shows and artworks that have informed Murillo’s new series. Throughout the book runs in parallel relevant works and a conversation between Oscar Murillo and Mark Godfrey which delves into the details of Murillo’s process and influences.

Inspired by the 1950s Brazilian neo-concrete movement, the photographic editing of the shows and artworks seeks to spark a poetic feeling in contrast to the rigidness of the design.

Shows highlighted in the book include Venice Biennale (2015), Museo de Arte de la Universidad Nacional de Colombia (2021), South London Gallery (2013), Carlos/Ishikawa (2012) and Kunsthalle Wien, Vienna (2024) in between others.

Oscar Murillo: Aesthetic Structures

Huma Bhabha’s new body of work was made during a three-week residency at Casa Wabi in early 2022. She traveled from Poughkeepsie, a small city on the Hudson River north of New York City, escaping winter and discovering the Oaxacan coast. Alongside a group of fellow artists in residence — each making work in their own studios, sharing meals and the experience of this unique meeting of landscape, culture, and Tadao Ando’s architecture – Bhabha has experimented with local materials and traditional methods to create an installation that brings into dialogue with this remarkable place her own very distinctive aesthetic.

Flavin’s “gaseous images” illuminate the landscape of the Kunstmuseum Basel

Legendary minimalist artist Dan Flavin (1933–96) began working with fluorescent light tubes in the early 1960s. Arranged in “situations,” he would then further develop them into series and large-scale installations. His pieces often included dedications, making reference in their titles to concrete events, such as wartime atrocities or police violence, or to other artists. The colors and dimensions of the materials he used were prescribed by industrial production. Flooded in light, viewers themselves become part of the works. The space, along with the objects within it, are set in relation to each other and thus become immersive experiences of art, triggering sensual, almost spiritual experiences. Flavin liberated color from the two-dimensionality of painting. This catalog looks at Flavin’s oeuvre in a less familiar setting: the indoor and outdoor spaces of the Kunstmuseum Basel.

This book focuses on Belgian artist Raoul De Keyser's hitherto understudied early works, including a catalogue raisonné of paintings made between 1964 and 1980. A leading exponent of European painting from the late 1980s to the early 2000s, De Keyser started painting in the 1940s but aborted his artistic career in the early 1950s, becoming a civil servant and journalist. Only in 1964 did he take up painting again with works blending the influence of Raveel, Dine, Held, and Noland. Soon, he developed his own idiom, evolving into a more subdued and abstract style in the 1970s. Based on extensive archival research, this book contains a wealth of artworks, photographs, posters, and documents that never have been published before.
