The Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam will present Silent Music, a major solo exhibition by Luc Tuymans, in the spring of 2027.
The title, taken from a Tuymans painting held in the Stedelijk’s collection, conveys not only the conceptual paradox of that specific work, but also Tuymans’s practice at large, and the ethos of the show. In the exhibition, subjects such as the evils of war, visual memories of colonialism, and the idea of the uncanny are seemingly veiled by his characteristic palette, painting style, and his method of creating “images of images.”
With nearly sixty paintings, Silent Music will unfold as a concentrated overview in the architectural heart of the Stedelijk. Aesthetic and unsettling, concealing and revealing, Tuymans’s work continuously moves between social engagement and painterly virtuosity. With this exhibition, the museum gives Tuymans’s titular painting a place in the collective memory of the Stedelijk’s artistic history.
