Yayoi Kusama: Life Is the Heart of a Rainbow spans seven decades ofYayoi Kusama’s artistic practice and includes 120 works, some shown for the first time in this major traveling survey. Organized by Russell Storer and Adele Tan, curators at the National Gallery Singapore, the exhibition features paintings from the artist’s ongoing My Eternal Soul series, as well as sculptures, videos, and installations, including immersive mirrored infinity rooms.
Life Is the Heart of a Rainbow travels to Museum MACAN from the Queensland Art Gallery (QAG), Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA) in Brisbane (November 2017–February 2018), where it was accompanied by Kusama’s Narcissus Garden (1966/2002), installed in QAG’s Watermall, and the interactive installation The obliteration room (2002–ongoing), displayed at GOMA’s Children’s Art Centre. The exhibition was initially presented at the National Gallery Singapore (June–September 2017), where it marked the first major museum presentation of the artist’s work in Southeast Asia.

Life Is the Heart of a Rainbow is one of several large-scale exhibitions of Kusama’s work currently on view internationally. At the Art Gallery of Ontario in Toronto, through May 27, 2018, Yayoi Kusama: Infinity Mirrors is the first institutional exhibition to explore the evolution of Kusama’s groundbreaking mirrored infinity rooms. In the artist’s hometown of Matsumoto, Japan, Yayoi Kusama: All About My Love, on view through July 22, 2018, marks the artist’s fourth and largest show to date at the Matsumoto City Museum of Art.
