‘William Eggleston Review: Infatuation With Saturation’ by Isaac Sligh

It’s a scene familiar to any American family at Thanksgiving or Christmas: Two boys take a breather on a car hood, perhaps in the middle of a game of backyard football or tag, their blue jeans spotted with mud. The untitled 1970 photograph, featured in William Eggleston: The Last Dyes, has a terrific sense of motion, from the sideward glances of the boys to the dramatic sweep of the Oldsmobile’s hood. But what sticks with us is the color: Despite the overcast sky, the mustard yellow and burnt orange of the boys’ shirt and sweater pop from the printed page.
