Artist Ruth Asawa made a name for herself as a sculptor in the San Francisco Bay Area, creating works using a wide range of media, employing a resourcefulness that stemmed from her early years on a farm in Southern California – and in a detention camp for Japanese Americans during World War II. She's now the subject of a retrospective on view at New York's Museum of Modern Art. Faith Salie reports.
