Marlene Dumas: Durmiendo con el enemigo/Sleeping with the Enemy

Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid, Spain

October 2, 2026

The Museo Reina Sofía has announced Marlene Dumas: Durmiendo con el enemigo/Sleeping with the Enemy, an exhibition of around eighty works, including paintings, drawings, and collages made from the 1970s to the present. The survey, however, does not unfold chronologically, but is articulated around thematic nuclei which travel through different times and contexts, relating different techniques and languages. Central to it are the perceptive tensions running through the artist’s work, often built from subtle connection points, as well as a series of recurrent dualities: eroticism and death, pain and pleasure, intimacy and distance, the relationship between word and image, together with the portrait as one of the pivotal genres in her practice.

Through these relations, the exhibition establishes a route through a complex field of meaning, in which senses are built through association, correspondence and superimpositions. After being shown in the Museo Reina Sofía, the exhibition will travel on to Bourse de Commerce — Pinault Collection in Paris and the Sammlung Moderne Kunst in the Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich.
