Southbank Centre Hayward Gallery, London, United Kingdom
September 7, 2027–January 9, 2028
Southbank Centre's Hayward Gallery has announced a major survey exhibition by Chris Ofili, curated by Senior Curator Yung Ma with Curator Azusa Hashimoto.
Marking Chris Ofili’s largest solo exhibition in London since 2010, this exhibition brings together formative works from the 1990s alongside his latest creations.
Ofili’s atmospheric and enigmatic paintings investigate the intersection of desire, identity and representation. Portraying characters from a range of aesthetic and cultural sources through a kaleidoscopic visual mode that bridges abstraction and figuration, his works serve as sites for journeys of creative transformation.
Chris Ofili represented Britain at the 50th Venice Biennale in 2003 and was awarded the Turner Prize in 1998. He received his BA from Chelsea School of Art, London, in 1991 and his MA from the Royal College of Art, London, in 1993. He lives and works in Trinidad.
Major projects and solo exhibitions include: Laure. Chris Ofili & Édouard Manet, Pinacoteca Agnelli, Turin (2026); Requiem commission, Tate Britain, London (2023 – present); Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami (2017); Weaving Magic, National Gallery, London (2017); Marisol commission, Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago (2017 – present); Night and Day, New Museum, New York (2014 – 2015); Tate Britain, London (2010); and Afro Muses 1995–2005, Studio Museum in Harlem, New York (2005).
