Best Book and Cover Designs of 2022 Revealed
July 7, 2023
We’re pleased to announce that two recently published David Zwirner Books titles have received AIGA's esteemed annual book awards, 50 Books | 50 Covers, for 2022. On July 5, 2023, AIGA, the preeminent American professional association for design, revealed that Diane Arbus Documents had been awarded in the book design category, and Donald Judd: Artworks 1970-1994 was named a winner in cover design.
Since its inception in 1923 as the Fifty Books of the Year competition, this annual event has marked the achievements and tracked the evolution in the field of book design. In 1995 the competition became known as 50 Books | 50 Covers, as it expanded to recognize excellence in cover design.
Through an assemblage of articles, criticism, and essays from 1967 to the present, Diane Arbus Documents charts the reception of the revolutionary photographer's work. Organized in eleven sections that focus on major exhibitions and significant events emerging from Arbus’s work, as well as on her methods and intentions, the sixty-nine facsimiles of previously published articles and essays––an archive by all accounts––trace the discourse on Arbus, contextualizing her inimitable oeuvre. Supplemented by an annotated bibliography of more than six hundred entries and a comprehensive exhibition history, Documents serves as an important resource for photographers, researchers, art historians, and art critics, in addition to students of art criticism and interested readers alike.
Designed by Atelier Dyakova, Donald Judd: Artworks 1970-1994 features works that range expansive installations to self-contained single units, yielding valuable new insights into Judd’s process and approach. The survey includes one of his largest and most intricate installations of wall-mounted plywood boxes, conceived in 1986. Brilliant and exacting reproductions capture these works in vivid detail. Following the major Judd retrospective at The Museum of Modern Art, New York, in 2020, this book serves as a companion volume. Artworks 1970–1994 was published on the occasion of the eponymous 2020 exhibition at David Zwirner New York.
