Luc Tuymans and Helen Molesworth in Conversation

Morgan Library & Museum, New York
January 23, 2020

Celebrating the third volume of his Catalogue Raisonné of Paintings, published in 2019 by David Zwirner Books, Luc Tuymans will be in conversation with the curator and writer Helen Molesworth. Tuymans, who is known for his distinctive, non-narrative paintings and whose recent exhibitions include The Return at De Pont Museum in Tilburg, The Netherlands and La Pelle at Palazzo Grassi, Venice, will present a new solo exhibition at David Zwirner, Hong Kong, in March 2020. Helen Molesworth, whose overview of Noah Davis’s brief but expansive career opens at David Zwirner in New York on January 16, curated the first United States retrospective of Tuymans’s work during her time as chief curator at the Wexner Center for the Arts in 2009.

The third volume of the catalogue raisonné of Luc Tuymans’s paintings, surveying nearly two hundred works, charts the artist’s investigation into painting’s relationship to history and technology. Edited with text by Eva Meyer-Hermann, who speaks about the project here, this volume includes an illustrated chronology with archival images and installation views of the featured works. It also presents brilliant color reproductions of each painting from this period. This publication is a testament to Tuymans’s persistent assertion of the relevance and importance of painting—a conviction that he maintains even in today’s digital world, when his work continues to be a touchstone for artists and scholars.
