Frieze Masters
David Zwirner is pleased to participate in Frieze Masters 2021 with a presentation of works by Ad Reinhardt, made between 1940 and 1950. This focused selection explores this important transitional decade in Reinhardt’s career, as his art evolved from the cubist- and constructivist-inspired abstractions of the late 1930s and early 1940s to works featuring sinuous calligraphic lines to all-over compositions of brick-like forms, which anticipate his celebrated red, blue, and black monochrome paintings of the 1950s and 1960s. These works highlight Reinhardt’s skill as a colorist and his interest in experimenting with his media, which included oil, ink, gouache, and collage on a variety of supports.
Concurrent with the presentation at Frieze Masters will be an online viewing room, on davidzwirner.com, dedicated to several of the Ad Reinhardt works on view at the fair. This will launch on October 8.
