Crossing the Line | David Zwirner

Ena Swansea, Roni Horn, Gilbert & George, Channing Hansen, and Marcel Dzama are among the many artists headlining during January 18-24’s busy schedule of art events and exhibitions in Hong Kong. Blouin Artinfo curates a list of these must-visit art shows for its readers. “Marcel Dzama: Crossing the Line” at David Zwirner January 22 through March 9 The show will feature a selection of drawings, dioramas, and a film by the Canadian-born artist Marcel Dzama. “Since rising to prominence in the late 1990s, Dzama has developed an immediately recognizable visual language that investigates human action and motivation, as well as the blurred relationship between the real and the subconscious,” David Zwirner says. “Drawing equally from folk vernacular, art-historical, and contemporary influences, Dzama’s work visualizes a universe of childhood fantasies and otherworldly fairy tales.” The featured works in the show reflect on the artist’s recent trip to Hong Kong, and revisits a range of fantastical motifs from his entire oeuvre. Elements from the theater and carnival combine with imageries of warfare and conflict in these compositions, creating a singular vision, which is “both playful and dark,” the gallery says. Many of these works feature text in different languages, allowing the artist to play with meaning and experiment with compositions. https://www.davidzwirner.com/
