Raoul De Keyser’s (1930–2012) enduring experimentation with painting made him one of the most celebrated artists of his time—and among the most influential of ours. In parallel with Frieze London and Frieze Masters, David Zwirner presents an online exhibition of paintings by De Keyser, alongside appreciations from contemporary artists Harold Ancart, Suzan Frecon, Rebecca Morris, Tomma Abts, and Luc Tuymans, who continue to be deeply impacted by the Belgian master’s practice.

In translating the concrete world in surprising ways that continue to defy expectations, De Keyser has played a significant role in the proliferation of European abstraction. His works balance abstraction and figuration, and feel unfamiliar—yet right. “Brain and heart crane to see over the shoulder of the eye,” The New Yorker wrote in 2009, “when a willing viewer beholds De Keyser’s unassumingly perfect art.”

This collection includes a compendium of rare and highly coveted works by De Keyser, and is presented in celebration of the modern master.

“The work of Raoul De Keyser, although informal and abstract, comes across to me as extremely personal, highly specific, and fully based on Raoul’s own interiorized visual experience of the reality around him. In this sense, Raoul, for me, resonates as the painter for painters that Albert Marquet once was.”

“I was incredibly excited by Raoul’s paintings but overwhelmed by them too, flooded by an intense longing to be an artist who could make a body of work like his. Here was a career’s worth of art at play, a way of composing and building an image that was personal yet also utterly open and generous.”

“De Keyser’s work seems simple and direct. But it doesn’t confront you, as it is quite a gentle proposal. The formation for the image seems mobile, temporary. A suggestion that could already look different in the next moment. You recognize something, and what you recognize is in this moment true.”

“I had a great esteem for Raoul De Keyser as a painter and as a person, and consider myself lucky to have known him…I made it a point to see his exhibitions when possible, and it seems to me that, as with most good painters, his work got better as he became older and his ability to handle paint grew.”

“I live with Raoul’s work so I get to touch it, visually. His paintings exist in that place very few of us dare to go—the silent, the imperceptible.”
