Harold Ancart Prints

David Zwirner is pleased to present lithographs and a woodcut print by Harold Ancart, whose exhibition Freeze is on view at the London gallery. Ancart partnered with the print publisher Ordinary Flame. The first series, Untitled (Flame), includes lithographs that were made in Paris in October 2017. They were produced in collaboration with Idem, formerly Mourlot studios, famous for printing the lithographs of Picasso, Matisse, Braque, Bonnard, and Miró, among other artists. Images of flames or fire are recurring subjects in Ancart’s paintings. According to the artist, fire is the ancestor of television and tells many stories. The second series, Bein’ Green, was made in Tokyo in May 2018. It includes a framed, Ukiyo-e style woodcut print of snake plants.

Produced in collaboration with The Adachi Institute of Woodcut Prints, renowned for printing the woodcuts of Yayoi Kusama, the series was supervised by The Adachi Foundation for the Preservation of Woodcut Printing and printed on Echizen kizuki hosho washi paper made by Living National Treasure Ichibei Iwano. The image in the woodblock is an imposing tropical flora that is at once individual blades of grass and a clump of skyscrapers extending above the horizon. As with his interest in flames, Ancart treats these organic forms as surfaces for visual exploration and reflection.
