Dialogues: Njideka Akunyili Crosby

Detail of painting by Njideka Akunyili Crosby, titled Blend in - Stand out, dated 2019

In this special live episode of Dialogues: The David Zwirner Podcast, Helen Molesworth catches up with Njideka Akunyili Crosby on the occasion of Coming Back to See Through, Again, the artist's first solo exhibition at the gallery. Together, they discuss Akunyili Crosby's methodically layered figurative compositions, in which she combines painted depictions of people, places, and subjects from her life with photographic transfers derived from her personal image archive as well as Nigerian magazines and other mass media sources. The resulting works are visual tapestries of contemporary life that evocatively express the intricacies of African diasporic identity. The exhibition was on view from May 23 to July 29, 2023.
