Studio: Carol Bove

A text description that reads Studio is a new online initiative focusing on recent works by gallery artists. These Carol Bove works continue her ongoing series of “collage sculptures,” composed of crushed and manipulated steel tubing with scrap metal and, often, a smooth steel disk. The works push the limits of steel’s physicality—and test our perceptions of material. Painted in vibrant colors, these sculptures are meditative considerations of art history and visual culture at large.

A text description that reads "There’s a set of colors that we are all looking at right now... Everybody’s perception of color is very mutable and changes and has to do with our fashions and conventions of the moment. So [my use of color] is in relation to that, and to each other, and it’s also in relation to history.”

A text description that reads “When the objects look digital, that turns me on. Certain colors make that happen and certain colors don’t. And then certain colors have this double meaning, if you can call it meaning—they go into this sort of associative matrix of things that have been reproduced. The problem I face as the first viewer of the work is that they look cerebral, but I don’t know why. It’s a problem I offer you.”
