Josh Smith on the roof of his studio, 2020
Josh Smith’s (b. 1976) work experiments freely with abstraction, figuration, and the expressive possibilities of painting. These paintings were made during the COVID-19 pandemic and New York City’s mandatory quarantine. Depicted is Smith’s neighborhood as he experienced it during early morning and nighttime walks within a locked-down city.
