An installation view of Doug Wheeler, Untitled, 1967.

Limited Time Only: Doug Wheeler, Untitled, 1967⁣

What's On View

For two weeks this October at our 20th Street gallery, we invite you to experience a historically significant work by Doug Wheeler. Untitled (1967) is on view for the first time since the artist’s first solo exhibition at the Pasadena Art Museum in 1968.

The present work is one of two large-format works of this kind in existence. This installation is a rare example of the artist’s “fabricated light paintings” made between 1965 and mid-1967, a period that marked Wheeler’s departure from traditional painting and his first experiments with light as a medium.

This fabricated light painting is installed on a white wall, above a white floor. The resulting effect is one of a halo of light that not only plays across the surface of the work but also melds with the white wall. As Wheeler’s longtime collaborator and author of the artist’s first major monograph, published by David Zwirner Books in 2019, art historian Germano Celant notes, “The radiant entity that emerges from the spray-painted acrylic sheet seems almost like the birth of a new phenomenal event.”
