Painter of Modern Life is a major museum survey of more than seventy paintings by Alice Neel, travelling through Europe until January 2018. One of the foremost American figurative painters of the twentieth century, Neel is known for her portraits of family, friends, and neighbors as well as writers, poets, and other cultural and political figures.
Curated by Jeremy Lewison, this exhibition was presented at the Ateneum Art Museum (part of the Finnish National Gallery in Helsinki) and the Gemeentemuseum in The Hague in 2016. A fully illustrated publication accompanies the exhibition.
