James Welling: Metamorphosis

David Zwirner is pleased to present work by American photographer James Welling (b. 1951), on view across two floors of the gallery’s Hong Kong location—the first solo presentation of the artist’s work in greater China. The exhibition will provide an overview of Welling’s career, spanning from the 1980s to the present, and will highlight the persistent tension in his photographs between abstraction and figuration, as well as his decades-long investigation of color phenomena. Viewed together, his body of work acts as a dynamic archive that reconsiders the history and technical capacity of the photographic medium.
 
On view in the exhibition will be photographs from Welling's series Aluminum Foil (1980–1981), Flowers (2004–2017), Glass House (2006–2010), Chemical (2010–), Choreograph (2014–2020), Bodies (2018–), and Cento (2019–).

 

卓納畫廊將於香港空間欣然呈現美國攝影藝術家詹姆斯·威靈(James Welling,b. 1951)的個展《變形記》,這也是藝術家在大中華地區的首次個展。展覽縱觀威靈自1980年代以來的創作生涯,突出他的攝影在抽象和具態之間的持久張力,以及他對色彩數十年來的深入探索。整體來看,他的創作項目如同一則動態的檔案,重新思考著攝影媒介的歷史和攝影技術的可能。

Since the 1970s, when he was a student at the California Institute of the Arts, American photographer James Welling has become known for a relentlessly evolving body of images that considers both the history and technical specificities of photography. Emerging at a time when the medium focused on its capacity for representing reality, Welling’s work signaled a break with traditional ideas by shifting attention to the construction of images themselves.

The earliest works on view in this exhibition, the Aluminum Foil series is an example of how, in Welling’s work, ordinary subjects are transformed into formal abstractions of texture and light.

In the richly detailed, vibrant surfaces of Welling’s Flowers, light, pigment, and fluidity reflect a painterly approach. While the earlier works in the series were created using analog techniques—literally laying flowers onto negatives—later examples use a digital process that allowed the artist to incorporate multiple images and adjust the colors.

Made between 2006 and 2010, Welling’s Glass House series documents Philip Johnson’s iconic Glass House, built in 1949 in New Canaan, Connecticut. Conflating the artist’s interest in photography and architecture, these works treat the building itself as a lens, amplifying its abstract potential and luminous effects.

“[Philip Johnson’s glass box] seems like a conceptual sculpture, a gigantic lens in the landscape. When I realized I could make the glass red or add reflections to the face of this supposedly transparent house, my project became a laboratory for ideas about transparency, reflectivity, and color.”

The Chemical series continues the artist’s ongoing experiments with cameraless photography. To make these works, Welling paints photographic chemicals on chromogenic paper and further inscribes the surface with graphite and other materials. The resulting compositions are at once paintings and photographs—both chemically derived and handmade.

《化學製劑》系列延續了藝術家長期以來不使用相機的攝影試驗。在創作這些作品時,威靈以繪畫的方式,將攝影成像的化學製品塗在感光相紙上,並用石墨等材料在照片表面題刻。最後的構圖既是繪畫又是攝影——既是化學的結果也是手工的創作。

Kusama (2014) is part of Welling’s MoMA Sculpture Garden project (2014–2016), which features images of the outdoor space at The Museum of Modern Art in New York. Here, an archival photograph of the Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama is layered with contemporary images of the MoMA space, then passed through Adobe Photoshop’s red, green, and blue color channels to yield a multilayered color image. “When I began to work with digital image processing,” Welling explains, “I realized that digital tools presented a key that would enable me to open what had been a locked system of color reproduction, color film, and paper.”

Welling’s Centos, which form part of a larger body of work by the artist entitled Archaeology, began in 2019. Continuing the themes mapped out in his Julia Mamaea photographs (2018–ongoing), in which the artist focused on a Roman portrait bust from the third century AD at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art, here he utilizes ancient Greek sculpture and architecture as his root imagery.

“Sculpture and architecture in ancient Greece were commonly painted. Intense color and gold leaf emphasized textile, hair, and skin.… But I was not interested in simply re-creating the colors of the ancient Greeks.… I applied highly unnatural colors to the sculptures. My hope is that these colors seep into the ancient stone and take on a life of their own.”
