A painting by Kerry James Marshall, titled Untitled (Morning), dated 2018.

"It’s the history of painting as it relates to the period after my retrospective [Kerry James Marshall: Mastry at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, 2016–17]. Once you’ve had a kind of summing up of your career as an artist, how do you continue? . . . You could make an argument that it is a grand, arrogant, claim to address the history of painting. On another level it’s a way of setting yourself up for failure, because the scope of the show suggests something so large—but it seems to me the only way forward is to take up a challenge." —Kerry James Marshall in conversation with Angela Choon, senior partner at David Zwirner, for Luncheon magazine, 2018

"If I’m going to do this show, and it’s going to be based on the idea of the history of painting, then I have to address it in its totality; landscape, still life, portraiture, abstraction, and history painting. But how do you do those things now, and really make those things as interesting as they can possibly be? How do you do them so that they also, at the same time, seem to be engaged with not only their function, but their origin?" —Kerry James Marshall in Luncheon magazine.
