Celebrating the States: Summer Campers take on American Art
The New York City Department of Parks & Recreation is pleased to present a new partnership with David Zwirner, a contemporary art gallery located in the heart of Chelsea. On Thursday, August 26 from 5 to 8pm, the gallery (519 West 19th Street) will host a oneday only special exhibition and reception for the young artists participating in this year’s Department of Parks & Recreation summer camps.
NYC Parks & Recreation runs 22 summer camps at recreation centers throughout the city catering to New York City public school children, ages 6 to 13 years old. The Manhattan summer camps are located in city recreation centers from Chinatown to Washington Heights.
On view at David Zwirner will be hundreds of artworks by children who are attending summer camp in five Manhattan recreation centers. The summer camp program offers a fun, safe, and supportive environment, encouraging children to use their imagination to enter a world of creativity and exploration. Currently studying and celebrating American artists within the "Celebrating the States" summer program, the children have made their own artwork inspired by such artists as Robert Rauschenberg, Jackson Pollock, Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Barnett Newman, Jasper Johns, and Keith Haring. A short documentary capturing the children making their artwork at camp will also accompany the exhibition.
