(March 8, 2012 – New York) David Zwirner is pleased to present the work of Michael Riedel at this year’s The Armory Show, where the artist will debut a site-specific work at the gallery’s booth, as well as new works, created especially for the fair.

Over the past decade, Riedel’s practice has incorporated a wide range of media and included large-scale works on canvas, fabric works, film and video, audio recordings, artists books, posters, installations, and events.

On Saturday, March 10, the artist will be signing books and posters at the gallery’s booth during the special VIP hour (11AM-12noon) and when the fair opens to the general public (beginning at 12noon). Included will be the recently released Perlstein (Walther König, 2011), which continues the artist’s so-called “Artforum” series. These publications, which also comprise Tirala (2006) and Meckert (2009), adopt the large square format of the art magazine they are named after, and include transcripts of some of the artist’s lectures and projects, although the design at times obscures their legibility. Other highly collectable artist publications by Riedel include Oskar (2003), False Frieze Art Fair Catalogue (Quasi Portikus) (2004), and Printed and Unprinted Posters (2003-08) (2008).

The artist was born in 1972 and currently lives and works in Frankfurt, where he also received a Meisterschüler at the Städelschule in 2000. Since 2004, he has been represented by David Zwirner. In 2011, The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog marked his third solo show at the gallery. His two previous solo shows comprised a return to his Filmed Films archive (Michael Riedel: Filmed Film, 2008) and a recreation of a Neo Rauch show held at the gallery, with black and white digital prints of the painter’s works reproduced as panels and mounted in various configurations in the same position the originals were hung. In contrast to Rauch’s static paintings, Riedel’s panels could be put together in a near-endless number of arrangements (Michael Riedel: Neo, 2005).

An upcoming solo exhibition is planned for June 2012 at the Schirn Kunsthalle in Frankfurt. Riedel’s work has been the subject of solo exhibitions at the Kunstverein Hamburg (2010); Städel Museum, Frankfurt (2008); Kunstraum Innsbruck, Austria (2007); and Portikus, Frankfurt (2002). His work has also been shown in major group exhibitions at prominent venues throughout Europe including the Kunsthaus Bregenz, Austria (2011); Galleria Civica d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea (GAM), Turin (2010); Tate Modern, London (2009); the Lyon Biennale of Contemporary Art (2007); the Moscow Biennale at the Lenin Museum (2005); and the Vienna Secession (2003).
