(March 29, 2012 – New York) David Zwirner is pleased to present the work of Philip-Lorca diCorcia at this year’s AIPAD (The Association of International Photography Art Dealers). 2012 marks the gallery’s first year of participation in this international photography fair.

On view will be recent works from the artist’s ongoing East of Eden series, begun in 2008, including a photograph based in New York which has not previously been exhibited (Untitled, 2011). Drawing from the Book of Genesis, the series takes the economic and political climate of the United States towards the end of the Bush era as a source of inspiration and depicts people and events as if existing or taking place just after “the fall,” conveying both a sense of disillusionment and a loss of innocence.

One of today’s most influential and innovative photographers, diCorcia is known for works that balance between documentary and theatrically-staged photography. His practice takes everyday occurrences beyond the realm of banality, infusing what would otherwise appear to be insignificant gestures with psychology and emotion. Photography is thus employed as a fictive medium capable of creating uncanny, complex realities out of seemingly straightforward compositions.

Other well-known series and projects by the artist include Hustlers, Streetworks, Heads, A Storybook Life, and Lucky Thirteen. DiCorcia has been represented by David Zwirner since 2007, and his critically acclaimed debut exhibition at the gallery, Thousand (2009), featured an extraordinary installation of 1,000 of the artist’s Polaroids. ELEVEN (2011), his second solo show at the gallery, presented a selection of his fashion photographs from eleven “stories” based in different locations across the world. Created between 1997 to 2008, the works were originally presented for W magazine.

Born in 1951 in Hartford, Connecticut, Philip-Lorca diCorcia received his M.F.A. from Yale University in 1979. His work has been the subject of solo exhibitions at prominent institutions, most recently at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (2008) and the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston (2007). In 1993, a major solo exhibition was organized by The Museum of Modern Art, New York. An upcoming solo show is planned for 2013 at the Schirn Kunsthalle, Frankfurt, and will travel to the Museum De Pont, Tilburg, The Netherlands.

He lives and works in New York and currently teaches at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut.
